NSW silica guidance for render preparation
SafeWork NSW’s code of practice for managing respirable crystalline silica commenced on 20 February 2026. It provides guidance on assessing and controlling exposure when work involves silica-containing materials.
For a rendering project, this matters when preparation includes tasks such as grinding or cutting existing masonry. The controls need to suit the material, the task and the exposure assessment. Before work starts, ask how the work area and nearby occupants will be protected.

01 / RENDER SYSTEMS
Cement bases and acrylic finishes can work together
Some specified systems combine a cement-based levelling coat with an acrylic texture finish. Dulux Acratex RenderWall is one example. Ask which layers are proposed and how the complete system suits your wall.
A surface that looks dry may still need time before coating. ROCKCOTE’s Polymer Render Grey instructions distinguish between proprietary base renders and fresh site-mixed render. Product requirements, moisture and weather affect the sequence.
Bring reference photographs and discuss a sample before settling on a smooth, textured or bagged appearance. Agree the texture, colour and coating sequence, including how the new finish will meet any existing rendered areas.
Find our Central Coast service information. For an exposed coastal wall, use our preparation guide to plan questions about the existing surface, moisture and the proposed finish.
Is an acrylic texture finish the same as the render base?+
No. A render base can level and prepare a compatible wall, while an acrylic texture provides the decorative finish in a specified coating system. Some systems use both. Ask which base, texture and protective coatings your quote includes. Dulux’s Acratex overview explains the roles of RenderWall base coats and subsequent acrylic texture systems.
What should I compare in a cement rendering quote?+
Compare preparation and repairs, the specified render and finish, access equipment, protection, waste removal and any final painting. Ask what is excluded and how additional work will be agreed. Our rendering quote guide explains the details to check.
Can one render product be used on every wall?+
Product suitability depends on the substrate, its condition and the complete specification. A product intended for absorbent masonry is not automatically the choice for every lightweight cladding. Start with our materials and substrate guide, then confirm the manufacturer’s requirements for the proposed system.
What should I send when I enquire?+
Send your suburb, wall photographs, approximate measurements, building height, access details and the finish you have in mind. Include close-ups of cracks, loose render, old coatings or damp areas. Our quote preparation guide will help you put the details together.
