Render Product Types: Bases, Textures & Finishes

Choose the function of each layer before choosing a brand. A cement base, acrylic texture and protective topcoat can all form part of one rendered wall. This guide connects the main product types to brand ranges and the matching rendering services.

Cement base render

Cement render levels and covers suitable masonry before the specified finish. Traditional site-mixed sand and cement and factory preblended renders require their own mixing, preparation and curing approach. A base render does not automatically include a decorative texture or paint.

Polymer-modified cement render

These products remain cementitious, with polymer modification to adjust properties such as adhesion and workability. The term acrylic-modified does not mean cement-free. Different grades address masonry, AAC, levelling or specified lightweight assemblies; choose the grade for the wall.

Plan the base-render scope.

Full acrylic and premixed renders

Full acrylic renders use an acrylic binder. Premixed describes the supplied form, so it should not be used alone to identify chemistry. Approved uses can include selected fibre cement or painted substrates, but preparation, existing coating condition and joint detailing remain essential.

Acrylic and mineral texture finishes

Texture is the visible grain or pattern over a prepared surface. Acrylic textures and bagged mineral finishes can provide different appearances and system requirements. Agree a physical sample, product grade, colour and any protective topcoat before comparing quotations.

Compare texture coatings.

Primers, bonding coats and patches

Preparation products help build a compatible system but do different jobs. A bonding or key coat, primer, jointing compound and high-build patch are not interchangeable. Diagnose loose render, moisture and movement before covering a damaged surface.

Protective topcoats and membranes

A protective coating sits over the compatible base or texture and contributes to the system’s specified performance and appearance. A facade membrane coating is not automatically a wet-area waterproofing membrane. Product, coat build, colour and maintenance requirements must be identified.

Plan texture and protective finishing.

Traditional bagging and acrylic bagged finishes

Traditional bagging works a thin mortar coating over masonry to retain a textured, often brick-readable appearance. Proprietary acrylic bagging finishes create a related look using a different material and application system. For an older wall, identify the original mortar, coating and moisture condition before choosing a repair.

Compare bagging and bagged-look finishes.

Lime, clay and decorative finishes

Lime plaster, clay finishes, polished plaster, concrete-look coatings and microtoppings form several separate material groups. Similar appearances can come from different binders. Interior or exterior exposure, room use, substrate, sealing and maintenance need to be checked for the exact product; specialist availability is confirmed on enquiry.

Explore decorative finish options.

Reinforced lightweight and insulated systems

EPS boards, AAC panels, fibre-cement sheets and ventilated rainscreens are different constructions. A complete assembly can include fixings, joints, mesh, render, texture and coating. Start with the nominated wall manufacturer and system documentation; individual product claims do not certify every combination.

Discuss the wall application.

Make the material schedule clear

Ask the quote to identify preparation, base render, reinforcement where required, texture and protective coating. The same final colour can sit over very different systems. A sample helps agree the visual result, while the current technical specification establishes what is suitable for the wall.
